Police announced the arrest of a 35-year-old Ithaca man on felony assault charges after a violent incident on November 26 in which a person was blinded in one eye.

Police attempted to take Whitaker into custody around 4:50 p.m., but he tried to flee. Those efforts were unsuccessful and as police took him into custody Whitaker continued resisting.

During that struggle an officer suffered non-life threatening injuries, which required treatment at a local hospital.

The original incident on November 26, which prompted a warrant for his arrest involved a physical altercation. During that incident, Whitaker is accused of gouging the victim’s eye to the point of them losing vision in that eye.

Whitaker was arraigned and released on his own recognizance. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact IPD as the investigation remains active.
