The Montezuma Audubon Center is set to host a series of guided hikes throughout December, offering unique outdoor experiences for nature enthusiasts and bird watchers.

These hikes, designed to encourage exploration and learning during the holiday season, provide opportunities to observe a variety of birds, including the possibility of spotting Bald Eagles. Each hike is crafted around a specific theme, ranging from songbird conservation to digital birding tools.

The first hike, scheduled for Saturday, December 9 at 10 AM, focuses on “Getting in the Holiday Spirit with the Songbirds” with a participation fee of $10. This event will include a discussion on conservation efforts for songbirds like the Eastern Bluebird and a 1-mile hike. Following this, on December 16 at 2 PM, the Center will offer an “Introduction to Birding in the Digital Age,” featuring a guided lesson on using the eBird and Merlin apps, with a representative from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. This event, also priced at $10, will conclude with a practical 1-mile hike to apply newly learned birding skills.

The series culminates with a special “Winter Solstice Guided Hike” on Thursday, December 21 at 10 AM. For a fee of $15, participants can learn about the history of the winter solstice and embark on a 2-mile hike to discover local birds and wildlife. The hike will be followed by a cozy gathering with hot cocoa, coffee, and winter treats. All hikes will meet at the Montezuma Audubon Center, located at 2295 State Route 89, Savannah, NY. Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult, and registration is required due to limited space. Interested parties can make reservations online or contact the Center for more information.
