DEC inspector says Ontario County Landfill landslide was non-violating

A recent soil-cap slide at the Ontario County Landfill has been thoroughly inspected by a state Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) inspector, who found no violations of solid-waste regulations.

The incident, which occurred on November 16 on the landfill’s southwest side, was discussed at the county Board of Supervisors’ Planning & Environmental Quality Committee meeting.

The inspector’s report confirmed that the area is prepared to handle significant rain events and that no leachate release or regulatory violations were observed.

Casella officials said the landslide involved 10,000 to 15,000 cubic yards of soil on a seven-acre slope but emphasized that stormwater control systems remain intact. Precautionary measures, such as removing soil from another area showing signs of instability and capping several damaged gas wells on the slope, have been taken.

Additionally, seven new deep gas wells are being installed to enhance monitoring and safety.
