The New York State Police are conducting a thorough investigation into a fatal hit and run incident that occurred on Interstate 86 near Bath.
The victim, identified as 40-year-old John W. Viviano of Sidney, NY, was struck and killed by a vehicle between the evening of November 17 and the early morning of November 18.
Viviano was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident took place near exit 38 on I-86, leading authorities to close the westbound portion of the interstate between exits 38 and 39 for an extended period. The State Police are urging motorists to find alternative travel routes.
The vehicle involved in the accident, believed to be a white Volvo semi-truck, model year 2019 or newer, reportedly fled the scene without stopping and is likely to have significant damage to the front passenger side.
The New York State Police are appealing to the public for any information that could aid in locating the vehicle and the driver responsible for the accident. Witnesses or anyone with relevant information are encouraged to contact the State Police at 585-398-4100. The investigation is ongoing, and no further details about the pedestrian or the incident have been released at this time.
