The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office successfully recovered a stolen SUV submerged in the Erie Canal on Saturday afternoon.
The operation began following a call received at 1:22 p.m. alerting authorities to a possible vehicle underwater, located just east of Clover Street. Upon arrival, sheriff’s deputies, in collaboration with the Pittsford Fire Department, confirmed the presence of the submerged vehicle.
Initial observations indicated that the SUV had been in the water for an extended period. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office scuba unit was promptly deployed to manage the extraction of the vehicle from the canal. The recovery effort was a notable example of the effective coordination between local law enforcement and emergency services in handling unusual and potentially hazardous situations.
Further investigation revealed that the SUV had been reported stolen from Rochester in July 2023. The recovery of the stolen vehicle from the Erie Canal marks a significant development in the case, although many details surrounding the vehicle’s theft and subsequent submersion remain unclear. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is continuing its investigation into the incident, seeking to uncover the circumstances that led to the SUV’s theft and its eventual disposal in the canal.
