The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance has seized the Don Juan Café Restaurant in Auburn due to nonpayment of taxes.

The Citizen reports that the restaurant, located at 104 Chapman Ave., currently owes the state $88,088.31 in taxes.

A representative from the Department stated that seizure of the business is generally considered a last resort, indicating the severity of the tax delinquency.

The state has expressed willingness to work with the restaurant’s owners to facilitate reopening, contingent on their efforts to address the outstanding tax debts.

The Don Juan Café Restaurant, known for its unique Puerto Rican cuisine, has been a distinct culinary presence in Auburn since its opening in 2015.
