ELECTION PREVIEW: Who’s running for Ontario County Coroner?

It’s been a surprise to some that among the most-hotly contested races in the Finger Lakes region is one taking shape in Ontario County for a job that most are surprised is still elected

The job of a coroner is to show up when families are experiencing one of their lowest moments. But, families are not the only ones that need a coroner to show up. It’s a vital part of the ‘first response’ that happens when a fatality occurs at a car accident or structure fire scene.

In Ontario County, response has taken center stage. Four candidates are on the ballot, but three of them, two Democrats and a Republican, say the biggest issue is response time. We spoke with three of the candidates running for Ontario County Coroner.

All three pledged to respond quickly and consistently to calls for service — vowing to be a better partner for the community of family and first responders who rely on them. Below is our conversation with those three candidates — including Tom Cheney, Nancy Augustine, and Laura Swarthout.

Editor’s Note: All candidates were invited to participate in our meet the candidates series in early-September. The only request of them was to provide a date they were available to interview. Those who were not included either did not respond to our request, or contacted our newsroom within the last 10 days of the election cycle.
