Weedsport schools get close to picking new nickname: Vote happening tomorrow

The Weedsport Central School District is on the verge of selecting a new nickname and logo, with “Thunderbolts” and “Wolverines” as the top contenders. A community-wide vote, open to students, staff, local residents, and alumni, is set to guide the final decision.

The voting will take place at the Junior/Senior High School on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. and continue on Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Additionally, alumni residing outside the district are being offered the chance to vote electronically.

The selection process comes after the New York State Education Department’s mandate prohibiting the use of Native American symbols by schools, which led the district to retire its “Warriors” branding. This prompted a preliminary survey from October 18-26 where “Wolverines” and “Thunderbolts” emerged as favorites among five potential choices, which also included “Evergreen,” “Express,” and “Green Wave.”

While the upcoming vote will inform the Weedsport Board of Education’s choice, it remains advisory in nature. The board is expected to make the definitive choice on the district’s new logo and nickname on November 6, after considering the community’s preferences.
