The University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) is engaged in a crucial round of contract negotiations with health care workers as their current union contract nears its expiration deadline of midnight Monday.
The contract under negotiation impacts over 1,800 service workers who are represented by the 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East. These workers and URMC have extended their current collective bargaining agreement multiple times while seeking a resolution that addresses wage increases and benefits enhancements to improve staff recruitment and retention. Union representatives began these negotiations with URMC management in late August.
As the clock ticks down to the expiration of the existing contract, the union has issued a statement expressing the possibility of organizing a picket line if an agreement is not reached. Both parties are set to resume talks at 9 a.m. Monday, in a final effort to come to terms before the current contract lapses.
