Herons cruise past Lakers 4-0 in regular-season finale

Four different Herons scored as the William Smith field hockey team cruised to a 4-0 nonconference win over SUNY Oswego to close out its regular season. The Herons move to 11-7 (5-2 Liberty League), while the Lakers conclude their season at 5-13 (1-6 SUNYAC).

William Smith outshot Oswego 11-2 and held a 10-2 edge in shots on target. The Herons also had an 11-0 advantage in penalty corner opportunities in the regular season finale.
Senior Libby Maxwell led William Smith with three points on one goal and one assist. She recorded two shots in the contest, landing both on target. Six different Herons recorded at least one point in the nonconference contest.

Senior Kristen McCormick played 45 minutes in goal for William Smith and recorded one save. With the win, she moves to 8-4 on the season. First-year Katherine Foley earned her collegiate debut in the win, playing the final 15 minutes in goal.

MATCH MOMENTS:

  • William Smith opened the scoring just 3:20 into the game after being awarded a penalty corner. Maxwell sent a pass to graduate student Kate Barilla who fired a shot past the Laker goalie to give the Herons an early lead.
  • Just over a minute later William Smith would double its lead. The Herons were awarded a penalty corner which this time, Maxwell capitalized on. Junior Rebecca Mantione and graduate student Mary Kate Breward were credited with the assists.
  • With just over one minute remaining in the first half the Herons would strike again. Senior Cora Nagle found graduate student Mackenzie Wodka who fired a shot past the Laker goalie. Wodka was credited with her second goal of the season.
  • William Smith closed out the scoring in the 57th minute after the Herons were awarded a penalty stroke. Sophomore Delaney Williams converted from the spot for her first goal of the season and second of her career.

COACHES CORNER:

“We wrapped up the 2023 regular season with a great team victory at Oswego,” said Head Coach Sophie Riskie ’07.  “We played a very nice passing game on field turf and saw scoring from four different players today. The Herons look forward to the Liberty League tournament next week!”

UP NEXT:

William Smith will be back in action Friday, November 3, when it hosts the University of Rochester in the Liberty League semifinal round. Action between the Herons and the Yellowjackets is set for 4 p.m. on McCooey Field.
