A high-speed maneuver ended tragically for a Campbell man on I-86 in the Town of Horseheads Saturday morning. Andrew Davis, 21, was killed after he lost control of his 2007 Yamaha R6 motorcycle while attempting to overtake a vehicle using the highway’s right-hand shoulder near the South Main Street eastbound on-ramp around 8:19 a.m. on Oct. 28, according to the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office.
Eyewitnesses reported Davis riding erratically and at significant speed when he accelerated to pass a merging vehicle. The move caused his motorcycle to kick up gravel and dirt, leading Davis to lose control. The aftermath of his loss of control saw him striking a concrete barrier, leading to his ejection onto the interstate. His motorcycle skidded for approximately 150 yards before halting.
Multiple agencies, including the Village of Horseheads Police Department, the New York State Police Department, and the New York State Department of Transportation, collaborated with the Chemung County Sheriff’s Office at the accident site. The incident resulted in a two-and-a-half-hour closure of a section of I-86.
