  • Staff Report

Alfred State College freshman Derek Correa is currently in a coma after being brutally attacked by four men on campus on Oct. 14, the college confirmed in a recent YouTube video. The young student suffered significant head injuries in the assault.

In response to the mounting medical expenses, Correa’s family has established a GoFundMe campaign, which has garnered over $36,000 in support by Tuesday morning. College president, Dr. Steven Mauro, expressed his deep concern, stating, “He is fighting for his life. This senseless act of random violence by outsiders has shaken our community.”

The attackers, identified as Eric Plante, 19, Jayson Lewis, 20, William Blye, 20, and Moses Scharborough, 19, all from Elmira, have been charged with 1st degree Gang Assault. None of the assailants are associated with Alfred State College as students.

Following their arraignment, all four have been detained at the Allegany County jail awaiting bail proceedings.
