Berg’s brace extends William Smith’s unbeaten streak

William Smith College midfielder Julia Berg scored a pair of goals as the fourth-ranked Herons defeated Nazareth University 2-0 in a non-conference contest on Cozzens Field this afternoon. With the win, the Herons are now 9-0-3 overall this season, extending their unbeaten streak to 12 games.

Berg, who was celebrating her birthday today, recorded her first career multi-goal game. Kirsten Nelson played all 90 minutes in goal as she notched her fifth shutout of the season.

Annika Monfort started in goal for Nazareth (5-4-5). She had a strong game in goal, finishing the contest with 10 saves. Monfort kept the Golden Flyers in the contest for most of the game making several spectacular saves.

SCORING SUMMARY

  • Berg opened the scoring in the 38th minute. She headed home a crossing pass from Charlotte Brown for her third goal of the season. Brown, who was making her collegiate debut, chipped the centering pass from near the corner flag. The pass found Berg’s head and beat Monfort.
  • The birthday girl doubled her total in the 55th minute. Berg collected a rebound inside the 18-yard box and slipped a shot into the back of the net. Julia DiMenna was awarded an assist on the goal after her initial shot hit the crossbar and bounced to Berg’s feet inside the six-yard box.

OFFENSIVE PRESSURE

  • Willliam Smith had its chances throughout the game, applying pressure in the offensive half of the field with nearly 72% of the game being played in the Herons’ offensive half of the field.
  • In the 11th minute, DiMenna had a shot punched over the crossbar by Monfort. Less than a minute later,   Ava Ruppersberger’s shot was smothered by Monfort.
  • Just before the opening goal, Brown ripped a shot off of the right goal post.
  • Leading up to her second goal, Berg had a shot blocked by a Nazareth defender in the 54th minute.
  • In the 68th minute, Monfort made a pair of diving stops on Ruppersberger.
  • Brown had another opportunity in the 83rd minute, but she chipped a shot just over the crossbar.
