Nicholas G. Flanigan, a 34-year-old probation officer from Auburn, was arrested on October 3 by New York State Police on multiple charges.
Flanigan faces two felony counts: Falsifying Business Records and Offering a False Instrument for Filing, as well as two misdemeanor counts for Official Misconduct.
A joint investigation revealed that Flanigan allegedly exploited his position as a Cayuga County Probation Officer, manipulating probationers for personal and financial benefits.
Among the allegations are inappropriate communications with probationers and a failure to properly supervise those under his jurisdiction.
The investigation was prompted by a concerned citizen who reported Flanigan’s actions to the Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office.
Authorities suspect there might be more victims, given Flanigan’s authority and influence over probationers who likely felt powerless against him. The State Police are urging anyone with information related to Probation Officer Flanigan to come forward.
