The Sands Family YMCA is set to open its new North Road facility on October 2, following fifteen months of construction.
Prior to the official opening, the facility is hosting open houses on September 30 for members and on October 1 for the wider community, allowing locals to explore the expansive new $24 million center. The Mickey Sands Child Care Center, located within the facility, has been operational since September 5, aligning with the commencement of the new school year, while the former YMCA location on 32 N. Main St. shut its doors on July 28.

The Sands Family, founders of Constellation Brands and the Canandaigua Wine Co., played a pivotal role in the establishment of the new YMCA, donating 13 acres of land and contributing $13.5 million towards its construction.
Further financial support included a $2 million state grant, a $1 million donation from Brian Prince for the aquatics program, and contributions from Canandaigua National Bank & Trust, LeChase Construction, and Floyd Rayburn Mason Contractors. Community fundraising efforts and the sale of the old YMCA property also contributed significantly to the project’s funding.
This state-of-the-art YMCA sprawls across 75,000 square feet, housing a myriad of amenities such as multiple gymnasiums, three exercise studios, two pools, an indoor splash playground, a teaching kitchen, and a creator’s space, among others. The facility aims to provide a diverse range of services including licensed day care and on-site medical services, catering to the varying needs of the community, and enhancing the quality of communal and recreational spaces available to the local populace.
