Rochester man charged with attempted rape after trying to meet up with teen

The Canandaigua Police Department announced the arrest of Matthew S. Ranelli, a 31-year-old resident of Rochester, on September 12 following an investigation.

The arrest stemmed from allegations that Ranelli, after engaging in an online conversation with someone he believed to be a 14-year-old child, traveled to Canandaigua intending to have sexual contact with the minor.

Authorities were alerted about the planned meeting, leading to Ranelli’s arrest by a Canandaigua Police Department Detective.

Ranelli was subsequently released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to face the charges in Canandaigua City Court at a future date.
