The Village Store in Geneva will close its doors after five decades

A fixture in the community for over 50 years, The Village Store, often referred to as the “Hallmark store,” closed its doors on Saturday.

Owner Karen Shoemaker, who recently turned 82, expressed a mix of relief and regret over the decision to close when recently speaking with the Finger Lakes Times.

While she had hoped to find a successor to continue the legacy of the store, those efforts were unsuccessful. Karen and her late husband Richard purchased The Village Store in 1972.

Health challenges of the staff and changing market dynamics influenced Shoemaker’s decision.
