Yates legislators approve additional funding for broadband expansion

The Yates County Legislature, in a contentious decision, has greenlit an extra $419,044 in spending for engineering services related to the county’s ongoing broadband project.

The Finger Lakes Times reports that the move comes on top of a previous $1.05 million contract with New York Engineering Services.

It was necessitated after a miscalculation were discovered in the initial plan, expanding the project from 205 miles of fiber connections to now 300 miles.

To cover the revised expenses, Yates County is set to use a supplemental $3.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, augmenting an earlier $10.4 million funding via the USDA’s Rural Utilities Service “ReConnect” initiative.
