Tompkins County takes on homelessness in new working group

In an effort to collaboratively address the growing concerns related to Ithaca’s West End homeless encampment, known as “the Jungle,” Tompkins County is forming its own task force.

Dubbed the “Land Use & Homelessness Working Group,” this initiative aims to bridge the gap between the city’s land use policies and the county’s responsibility for new services tailored for the encampment’s inhabitants, according to new reporting by The Ithaca Voice.

This comes after divisive aspects emerged from the City of Ithaca’s proposal, including a controversial enforcement protocol that might involve police citations for the homeless campers.

County and city officials, outreach workers, and law enforcement personnel are among those invited to be part of this new initiative.
