The New York Mets (65-78) ninth-inning rally fell short in a 4-3 series-opening loss to the Arizona Diamondbacks (76-69) on Monday night at Citi Field.
With the Mets trailing by a run in the bottom of the ninth inning, Ronny Mauricio worked a leadoff walk and advanced to third base on a sacrifice bunt and a stolen base. But Daniel Vogelbach struck out, and Brandon Nimmo hit a fly out, stranding Mauricio.
Mauricio drove in a pair of runs earlier in the contest, and Jeff McNeil smacked his eighth home run of the season.
Jose Quintana allowed two runs on five hits over five innings while walking two and striking out four.
The Mets will try to bounce back on Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. with Jose Butto on the hill.
