Sheriff David Cirencione of Ontario County highlighted a recent arrest in connection with an elder abuse scam in his August report.

A disabled elderly woman from Phelps was allegedly exploited by an individual living with her, who purported to assist her. That person was found to be stealing property and money from the elderly resident, and even made unauthorized purchases to her credit cards.

Now, Dylan M. Smith, 28, from Canandaigua, faces felony charges of grand larceny, with additional charges likely.

In his report, Cirencione also touched upon various monthly sheriff’s office activities.

Four inmates at the county jail completed the therapy program aimed at curbing repeat offenses through personal growth, anger management, and counseling.

Six new deputies, fresh graduates from the Finger Lakes Law Enforcement Academy, embarked on their 12-week field training.

August saw the 911 Center process almost 15,000 events, with deputies attending to situations ranging from drug overdoses to traffic incidents.

Sheriff’s deputies conducted 529 traffic stops and 30 pistol permit applications were processed in the month. The average daily inmate population at the county jail stood at 82, too.
