The New York Mets (64-75) were nine outs away from taking both games from the Washington Nationals (63-77), but the bullpen gave up three consecutive runs in a 3-2 loss on Wednesday night at Nationals Park.
New York led 2-0 going into the bottom of the seventh inning when Trevor Gott came on in relief of rookie Jose Butto and gave up back-to-back RBI singles, both of which were charged to Butto. Then, in the ninth, Phil Bickford allowed a walk-off single.
Francisco Lindor and Mark Vientos provided all the offense, plating runs with RBI singles. Ronny Mauricio collected two more hits, extending his hitting streak to five games.
The Mets will get the day off Thursday before they begin a three-game series with the Minnesota Twins on Friday at Target Field.
