Penn Yan man passes away after wife dies in incident currently under investigation

An 89-year-old Penn Yan man, Ronald Salyer, who police suspect was involved in the recent death of his wife, has died.

Police Chief Tom Dunham told the Finger Lakes Times in a statement that Salyer passed away at Geneva General Hospital after initially being moved from Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital in Penn Yan to palliative care.

Salyer, known to suffer from dementia, was discovered in a frail state at his Franklin Street residence, in the same bathroom where his wife, Jane Salyer, also 89, was found dead on August 29 by a home health aide.

An autopsy on Jane Salyer is ongoing at the Monroe County medical examiner’s office. The police, in collaboration with the Yates County district attorney’s office, are reviewing the case. Chief Dunham reiterated that while investigations continue, no other suspects are being considered. He extended condolences to the Salyer family, acknowledging the challenging circumstances.
