The New York Yankees (65-69) could not complete the four-game sweep of the Tigers (60-74) as they fell 4-3 in 10 innings on Thursday afternoon at Comerica Park.
New York managed just two hits through the first eight innings but rallied in the ninth and tied the game on Anthony Volpe’s three-run home run. However, Detroit won it in the tenth on a throwing error by Gleyber Torres.
Clarke Schmidt allowed three runs on six hits over 4.2 innings. The right-hander gave up all three runs in the fifth.
Keynan Middleton, Tommy Kahnle, and Albert Abreu posted scoreless outings.
The Yankees will head to Houston to begin a three-game series with the Astros on Friday night. Jasson Domínguez and Austin Wells are expected to make their Major League debuts.
