Auburn school district moves ahead with new smartphone policy

  • Staff Report

The Auburn Enlarged City School District Board of Education has ratified changes to its student cellphone use policy, expressing concerns over the devices’ impact on students’ mental health and learning.

The decision was reported by The Citizen and unanimous among the present board members.

It took place during Tuesday night’s meeting. The newly endorsed amendment, which underwent changes following community feedback, permits teachers at Auburn High School to specify times for device use in classrooms.

Additionally, administrators have the discretion to allow electronic device usage on school premises during school hours. Despite these allowances, the policy prohibits device usage for disruptive behavior, illegal acts, cheating, or any form of harassment or bullying. Repeated violations will result in escalated disciplinary actions.
