New York sees rise in private sector jobs during July: Labor participation hits 10-year high

The New York State Department of Labor reported today a growth in the state’s private sector employment, adding 6,300 jobs in July 2023, marking a 0.1% month-to-month increase, bringing the total to 8,247,200.

This growth is consistent with the national trend, with U.S. private sector jobs also observing a 0.1% rise in the same month. Over the year, New York’s private sector job count surged by 145,100 (1.8%), though this was slightly behind the U.S. increase of 2.1%.

Moreover, New York’s unemployment rate remained steady at 3.9% for July 2023. Notably, the state’s labor force experienced an uptick of 23,500, pushing the labor force participation rate from 61.2% to 61.4%. This represents the highest rate since October 2013. It’s important to note that these figures are based on a payroll survey undertaken by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics and are subject to revisions as additional data becomes available.
