Straight
A straight is a hand in which all five cards are consecutive in rank. For example, if you have 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 then you have a straight – that’s numbers 2 through 6 on the board (2 being the lowest).
Straight Flushes are very rare and occur when all five cards are of the same suit. There are three ways to make this happen: You could have four out of five cards in your hand be one suit, or you could have three out of four cards be one suit, or finally–and most commonly–you can get two out of three cards in your hand be one suit while having two other unrelated cards as well!
Three of a Kind
Three of a kind is a hand that has three cards of the same rank and two other cards of different ranks.
An example of a three of a kind is three 7s and two 4s.
The highest three of a kind is when all three cards are of the same rank (e.g., 77).
Two pair
Two pair is a hand where you have two cards of the same rank and another two cards of different ranks. The highest card in this hand is the one that is of the same rank as your other two cards.
Examples:
- You have a pair of kings and an ace, plus four other random numbers from 2-7 (for example, 6-3-4-2). In this case, your best possible hand would be AKQJT984 because AKQJT984 has both K’s for kings and A’s for aces–the best possible combination!
- You have two pairs but they aren’t identical (for example KKJJ9). In this case, you cannot use either pair by itself; instead, you must use them together with another set of three unconnected cards to make up five total matching symbols across all five numbers on your hand (KKJJ9).
One pair
A pair is a set of two cards of the same rank. For example, if you have an ace and a king, that’s called a pair of aces. The highest card in this hand is called the kicker and determines whether or not you win. If both opponents have one pair, whoever has the highest kicker wins their bet back plus their original bet amount!
Pair hands can be very useful for bluffing because people will often assume that no one can have two pairs unless they’ve been dealt four cards instead of five (or more).
