The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) reported that an automated work zone speed camera recently clocked a driver at a staggering 139 MPH in a Monroe County work zone.
The cameras are a part of the Automated Work Zone Speed Enforcement (AWZSE) program, a joint five-year initiative by NYSDOT and the New York State Thruway Authority (NYSTA) to ensure safer highways.
NYSDOT took to Twitter to admonish the driver’s behavior and underscore the importance of driving safely in work zones.
The department reminded motorists of the potentially lethal consequences of reckless driving, citing that in 2022 alone, work zone intrusions led to three fatalities and 56 injuries.
