UPDATE: One dead, four hospitalized after crash in Steuben County

A fatal accident involving two vehicles occurred on State Route 415 at the intersection of Michigan Hollow Road in the town of Avoca, Steuben County on August 6, 2023.


The deceased, 51-year-old Michael A. Hinrich of Nunda was driving a 2001 Chevrolet Camaro westbound on Michigan Hollow Road when he attempted a southbound turn onto State Route 415.

His vehicle was struck on the driver’s side by a 2018 Buick traveling northbound on State Route 415, operated by 26-year-old Michael S. Eldridge of Hornell.


Hinrich was pronounced dead at the scene by the Steuben County Coroner’s Office. Eldridge, along with 26-year-old Christopher D. Nickerson of Wellsville, a passenger in the Buick, and 36-year-old Casie L. Lewis, a passenger in the Camaro, were all transported to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

New York State Police were assisted at the scene by several local agencies, including the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department, Avoca Ambulance, and the Kanona Fire Department.

The investigation is still ongoing.
