David Jakubonis, an Army veteran accused over a year ago of attacking New York gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin, has been cleared for independent living following significant progress in substance abuse and mental health treatment.
The D&C reports that despite ongoing federal and state criminal cases, Jakubonis’ lawyer, John DeMarco, confirmed that his client has remained sober and met all required treatment markers.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Marian Payson approved Jakubonis’ transition to independent living in late July, lifting a previous court-ordered driving restriction.
Jakubonis was charged federally with assaulting a Congressional representative with a deadly weapon and with second-degree attempted assault at the state level, following an incident at a rally in June 2022.
