The Ithaca Police Benevolent Association has announced an extension to the application deadline for the upcoming Ithaca Police Officer entrance exam. Aspiring police officers now have until August 7th, 2023, at 4:30 PM to apply. The association’s President, Thomas Condzella, described the Ithaca Police Department (IPD) as a “small department with big opportunities,” emphasizing various career growth and training opportunities within the department.
The IPD, currently experiencing staffing shortages, offers numerous specialty assignments and promotional paths including ranks of Investigator, Sergeant, Lieutenant, Captain, and specialized units such as K9, SWAT, and Crime Scene Unit. Along with a competitive annual salary of $89,884 after three years, the department provides health and dental benefits, pension plans, and other incentives. Condzella expressed optimism in the ongoing negotiations with the City for a new labor contract, due to expire at the end of 2023, and confidence in the city’s commitment to its officers.
Condzella highlighted the shared goals of the police force and the community for a “safe and vibrant community” and the vital role of new recruits in achieving this vision. He urged those interested in serving the community and expanding the level of service provided by the IPD to apply. The department currently has around 15 funded vacancies, with more retirements anticipated. Applications can be made through the IPD recruitment website at www.ipd-recruit.com.
