The Great Northern Mall in Onondaga County is set to undergo a significant transformation following its acquisition by a partnership between Hart-Lyman Companies, LLC, and Conifer Realty.
Plans for the 120-plus-acre site include the creation of a “town center” encompassing medical offices, entertainment spaces, and hundreds of residences. This redevelopment aims to establish a walkable shopping and living experience and aligns with the county’s vision to accommodate the influx of workers expected at Micron Technology, as well as tens of thousands of supply-chain jobs.
Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon expressed enthusiasm for the local developers’ ambitious project, seeing it as a significant step toward fostering unprecedented growth and opportunity in the region. However, the redevelopment has not been without controversy, as mall tenants claimed they were given little notice to vacate the property in 2022.
Construction is expected to begin next year following further refinement of the project’s concept and site planning.
