Pete Alonso homered twice and drove in all five runs as the New York Mets (49-54) picked up a 5-1 victory over the Washington Nationals (43-61) on Friday night at Citi Field.
Alonso crushed a three-run home run in the fifth and belted a two-run homer in the seventh, his 29th and 30th long balls of the season.
Max Scherzer made his final start before Tuesday’s trade deadline and tossed six innings of one-run ball while walking two and striking out seven.
Jeff McNeil collected three of the team’s eight hits.
The Mets will try to take the first three games of this four-game series on Saturday at 7:10 p.m. Carlos Carrasco will take the mound.
