The University of Rochester Public Safety Officers Association (URPSOA) is urging university leaders to authorize the arming of peace officers on all campuses, a privilege currently limited to those stationed at the Medical Center Campus.
URPSOA President Eric Bonacchi penned a letter to University President Sarah Mangelsdorf, emphasizing the increased safety concerns due to higher crime rates in the area and the escalating dangers unarmed peace officers face when responding to potentially perilous situations.
Bonacchi, who has served as an unarmed peace officer at the university for eight years, has shared experiences with university leaders where he felt defenseless, such as when a suspect pulled a knife on him and he had to wait for armed backup. He argues that having to call in armed supervisors slows their response to critical situations.
