Why are there cops at the Auburn Wegmans? Part of new collaboration between APD, grocery chain

In a move to increase security, Auburn Wegmans has enlisted the help of the local police department stationing off-duty officers at the store on select days.

Auburn Police Chief James Slayton told The Citizen the initiative was instigated by the supermarket chain itself, initially requesting an officer present seven days a week.

However, an agreement was reached for a four-day schedule, with officers working between 5:45 to 11:45 p.m. from Thursday to Sunday.

The decision for the increased security was not sparked by any specific incident, according to officials.

For the officers, this is an off-duty detail that doesn’t affect normal police shifts, with Wegmans covering the related costs.
