Ontario County appoints new public health director as Mary Beer retires

After a 14-year tenure, Mary Beer, the Public Health Director for Ontario County, is retiring and will be succeeded by Kate Ott, who was recently appointed to the role at a meeting of the Ontario County Board of Supervisors on July 13.

Beer, who has spent over 40 years in the nursing profession, has been celebrated for her dedication, leadership, and commitment to the health and wellbeing of Ontario County residents. Her retirement marks the end of an era, and she will be greatly missed by her staff, county leadership, and community partners.

Kate Ott, an experienced member of the Ontario County Public Health Department, brings 17 years of experience in Communicable Disease Surveillance, Health Education, and most recently as Deputy Public Health Director.

Eager to take on the role, Ott acknowledges the solid foundation left by Beer, highlighting her leadership, knowledge, common sense, and forward-thinking as keys to the department’s successful future. She expressed her enthusiasm to work with county leadership and her department team to improve health outcomes for Ontario County residents.
