Max Scherzer failed to keep the ball in the park as he gave up four home runs, matching his career high. The right-hander, who gave up five runs, has given up 14 runs over 24 innings in July.
Jeff McNeil plated a pair of runs with a single to center and ended up racing around the bases for a “Little League home run” after a throwing error by the Red Sox catcher. Francisco Alvarez, Mark Vientos, and Brett Baty had RBI singles.
Trevor Gott’s struggles with New York continued as he gave up three runs, raising his ERA to 11.57 over seven appearances.
The Mets will try to win the series on Sunday at 7:10 p.m. Carlos Carrasco will get the start for New York.
