The New York Yankees (49-42) suffered a brutal 7-4 loss to the Chicago Cubs (42-47) in the rubber match at Yankee Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

New York led 4-1 after six innings, but things fell apart in the seventh after Gleyber Torres booted a potential inning-ending double play. Following the error, the Cubs plated three runs to tie the game before taking the lead in the eighth and holding on to win the series.

Anthony Volpe and Kyle Higashioka smacked back-to-back home runs, while Anthony Rizzo added an RBI double. It was Volpe’s 13th of the season and Higashioka’s fifth.

Domingo Germán looked really sharp again, allowing two runs (one earned) on just one hit while striking out nine.

The Yankees will get four days off for the All-Star break and will return to action on Friday when they begin a three-game series with the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field.
