Geneva City Council has passed a controversial ordinance allowing food trucks at Lakefront Park, following a 5-3 vote this week.
The decision, met with resistance from downtown restaurant owners, permits mobile food vendors to operate seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., between April and October.
Vendors must pay a yearly licensing fee of $750 and adhere to a set of regulations to sell food at the park.
Downtown restaurant owners have expressed concerns about potential business losses due to the presence of food trucks, with Katherine Price, director of the Geneva Business Improvement District, stating that downtown’s 36 restaurants unanimously oppose the ordinance.
However, City Council believes the move will enhance the Lakefront Park experience.
