In the aftermath of heavy rains, the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office has extended the boating advisory on Canandaigua Lake in the Finger Lakes due to significant debris, including large tree logs, present in the water.

The debris, washed into the lake by the recent downpour, poses a risk to water vessels with even small sticks capable of causing severe damage.

While authorities work to clear the water, boaters are urged to reduce speed and exercise extra caution to avoid damage to their motors or engines.

With water levels also higher than normal, fast boats and large wakes can cause further damage to the shoreline. Despite the lack of a specified end date for the boating advisory, local residents plan to observe caution while celebrating the Independence Day on the water.

During the advisory and amid the 4th of July traffic, boaters are recommended to lower their speed to 20mph, down from the usual limit of 45mph.
