A fire that broke out on the cooktop at Five Guys Burgers & Fries located in the Ithaca Shopping Plaza was promptly dealt with on Monday morning, according to the Ithaca Fire Department.
The fire was confined to the cooktop, with no extensions found elsewhere in the establishment. The restaurant’s cooktop has been red tagged by the fire department, indicating that it’s unsafe for use.
According to IFD public information officer Assistant Chief Jim Wheal told 14850, the quick containment of the fire was due to the Ansul system, an automatic commercial kitchen fire extinguisher.
Wheal confirmed that there were no injuries reported at the scene. Though firefighters will soon clear the area, the restaurant will remain closed for the time being. The Building Department is set to assess the situation and guide the next steps for the establishment’s reopening.
