Wage theft could become felony under proposed law

A measure that could reclassify wage theft by employers as felony larceny is set to land on the desk of New York Governor Kathy Hochul.

The labor union-backed bill, which received final approval from the state Assembly this week, aims to enhance penalties for employers who defraud workers out of their earnings.

If enacted, the new law would expand liability to include wage theft amounts under $1,000, making it easier for prosecutors to identify and pursue repeat offenders.

The bill enjoys support from labor groups throughout the state and State Attorney General Letitia James.

Once approved, the changes would take immediate effect.
