Mets reinstate Pete Alonso, option Mark Vientos to Triple-A Syracuse

The New York Mets made surprising roster moves ahead of Sunday’s series finale against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The club reinstated Pete Alonso from the injured list and optioned Mark Vientos to Triple-A Syracuse.

These moves come as a surprise because Alonso suffered a bone bruise on June 7 in a game against the Atlanta Braves and was supposed to miss 3-4 weeks, but he returned in 11 days.

Alonso is second in Major League Baseball with 22 home runs and leads the Mets with 49 runs batted in.

The All-Star first baseman is hitting cleanup as the Mets try to take two of three from the Cardinals.
