Man sentenced to 15 years for stabbing police officer in Cayuga County

Cayuga County resident Luke Gaffney has been sentenced to 15 years in prison and 5 years of post-release supervision for a felony aggravated assault on a police officer.

Gaffney was found guilty in March 2023 for the violent incident that transpired in October 2020, when he used a knife to attack Deputy Adam Bacon as the officer was attempting to seize firearms from Gaffney’s Aurelius home.

The assault led to a six-hour standoff before Gaffney surrendered to law enforcement, and Deputy Bacon was subsequently taken to Upstate Medical University for medical attention.

District Attorney Grome Antonacci underscored the message the sentencing conveyed, stating that violence against law enforcement would not be tolerated and expressing hope that the resolution would provide closure for Deputy Bacon, his family, and the community.
