Camp Beechwood, a beloved Girl Scouts camp located on the shores of Lake Ontario near Sodus in Wayne County, is fondly remembered as thousands of girls spent their summers there for nearly seven decades.
The camp, which operated year-round with winter stays for smaller groups, provided a range of activities such as hiking, swimming, canoeing, crafts, and sports. After its closure, environmental groups played a crucial role in preserving the sprawling property.
Established in 1929 on a massive complex of approximately 150 acres, Camp Beechwood featured wooded knolls, meadows, hills, fields, and a large beach. During the summer months, girls camped in tents, while colder periods saw them accommodated in a central lodge.
The camp held multiple sessions annually, with around 125 Scouts attending each session for two weeks. In 1996, due to financial constraints and a shortage of adult leaders, Girl Scout officials made the difficult decision to close Camp Beechwood.
However, the camp’s legacy lives on through Beechwood State Park, managed by the town of Sodus and situated on the same property.
While not a typical state park with modern amenities, Beechwood State Park is cherished as a nature preserve and a captivating example of reclamation. The park’s serene atmosphere and rich history make it a special destination for those seeking a deeper connection with the outdoors.
