Summer is close: What are people drinking?

As the summer gathering season gets underway top beverage trends to look out for include Mexican beers such as Modelo, non-alcoholic craft beers like Athletic Brewing Company’s and Dos Equis Lime & Salt Zero, premium tequilas backed by celebrities like Thomas Rhett and Sammy Hagar, and ready-to-drink options including High Noon tequila seltzers and Twisted Tea.

These trends come against a backdrop of continuing popularity of home entertaining, with a rise in spending on spirits and beer at retail by 1.2% and 2.2% respectively in 2022, even as wine sales dipped 2.4%, according to Bump Williams Consulting.

Consumers are also showing preference for slightly pricier options, willing to splurge on canned cocktails or imported beer over typical domestic premium beer.

However, overall consumption seems to be lowering, with alcoholic beverages prices up by 4.6% in April 2023, likely cutting into some spending. Non-alcoholic drinks too have seen a surge, with sales up by 3% in 2022.

The market share for spirits and beer have seen an uptick, thanks to ready-to-drink cocktails, tequilas and a high demand for bourbons, while wine’s share slightly declined, according to NielsenIQ data.
