In compliance with the state Education Department’s mandate to change all Native American-related school nicknames, the local school district has invited residents to attend a public meeting at 6 p.m. on June 14 in the school auditorium.
The board had already voted on May 23 to replace the current nickname ‘Warriors’ used by its athletic teams, setting the stage for the implementation in the 2023-24 academic year.
Officials say the meeting’s agenda will include forming a steering committee, sharing state guidelines on the issue, addressing public inquiries, and discussing the name change process.
The new name is likely to be in place by the time school resumes in September.
This change aligns the district with three other local districts—Waterloo, Canandaigua, and Red Jacket—that are also transitioning from their Native American-related monikers.
