Longtime Wegmans employee accused of embezzling over $500,000 through fraudulent customer returns

Alicia Torres, a 47-year-old resident of Webster, has admitted to embezzling more than half a million dollars from Wegmans.

From 2014 through February 2023, Torres orchestrated 350 fraudulent credit card refund requests in the names of customers, with amounts based on previous transactions she observed.

Torres manipulated the system by tricking pharmacists into authorizing these fictitious refunds.

Once approved, she transferred the refund amounts to herself by swiping her own debit card in the Wegmans’ system. The total money defrauded this way amounted to $568,021.69.

Additionally, between 2020 and February this year, Torres pilfered another $10,922 through fraudulent use of gift cards, according to the U.S. Attorney. For her wire fraud crime, Torres now faces a possible sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000, with sentencing scheduled for September.
