Lawmakers want early voting by mail in New York: Can they get it?

In response to New York voters’ rejection of a constitutional amendment for no-excuse absentee balloting, Democratic lawmakers are now proposing to broaden early voting options by including voting by mail.

The proposal, endorsed by Assemblymember Karines Reyes and State Sen. Michael Gianaris, intends to grant all New Yorkers the privilege of early mail voting.

This adjustment to voting options wouldn’t necessitate constitutional changes, unlike the previously rejected amendment, offering a feasible approach to ease voting processes.

However, this expansion initiative faces opposition from Republican and Conservative Party leaders who have persistently resisted such attempts.

They express concerns over the capabilities of election officials to efficiently manage a considerable increase in volume associated with vote-by-mail options.
