National shortage of Adderall having an impact on local patients and pharmacists

The US is facing a nationwide shortage of Adderall, leading to extended periods without medication for many who rely on it.

The shortage of dextroamphetamine-amphetamine salts, better known by the brand name Adderall, has significantly affected pharmacy stocks, causing unexpected wait times for patients attempting to refill their prescriptions.

According to Dr. Stephen Cook, associate professor of pediatrics and internal medicine at the University of Rochester, this shortage is impacting patients of all ages. State laws and FDA regulations limiting drug production are causing supply issues for both Adderall and Ritalin.

Dr. Cook explained the uncertainty surrounding the availability of the medication, including sudden shifts from generic to brand names that can cause significant price increases for patients.

Despite a noted rise in Adderall prescriptions, Cook is not overly concerned, attributing the increase to improved screening for ADHD and mental health issues within health systems. With the extension of telemedicine rules during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s recommended for patients to discuss with their doctors to find pharmacies most likely to fulfill their prescriptions on time.
